Our Firm Culture – A student perspective
TRANSCRIPT
Branden Lauer, Associate:
I would describe the culture as quirky, fun to work at. Fun is such a boring word. I find that the culture is a little bit unique when compared to other firms. There isn’t a cookie cutter type of lawyer at Gowling WLG. Everyone is a little bit different and everyone is really, really interesting.
Anita Yuk, Articling Student:
I chose the firm, originally, because of the people I met during the firm tour. I really liked that they seemed to take the work seriously, but not themselves too much, which was exactly the atmosphere I was looking for.
Roch Ripley, Partner:
One of the best things about the office is that it’s always given me opportunity. It’s a very entrepreneurial culture.
Nick James, Articling Student:
The culture at Gowling WLG is very collegial. The lawyers here are very respectful and, humble even, is a word I would use to describe them. They’re just really down to earth and great people to work with.
Alexei Paish, Summer Student:
The culture at Gowling, in my experience, has been unabashedly fun in a way that I didn’t expect at a law firm, generally.
Right from the first week we started having a lot of activities involving students and associates. None of them mandatory. You wouldn’t not want to go to them because they were a total hoot.
Max Brunette, Partner, Co-chair – Vancouver Student Recruiting Committee:
What struck me immediately upon coming over to Gowling is the collegial atmosphere, and I don’t mean to sound cliché, but folks here are welcoming. It’s a nice area to practise and people were also very keen to get me involved in their practice areas.
Stacey Handley, Partner, Co-chair – Vancouver Student Recruiting Committee:
Clearly, the collegiality and the culture, is one of the things I enjoy the most. It is like a family here, and that’s important to me in practicing law, and I just find the environment dynamic and the work’s really exciting.
Kean Silverthorn, Summer Student:
The reason I chose to stay on and article here at Gowling WLG was the people that I get to work with. I really find that the lawyers here go out of their way to really contextualize the file and bring you up to speed on that area of law, in a way that I know that a lot of other law firms in the City may not do, and I find that’s really valuable in becoming the lawyer that I would want to be.
Matt Mitchell, Associate:
This office has been very, very good at supporting initiatives that myself, or colleagues, have. I feel like I could develop the kind of career I would like to have here and I have an actual voice and a future in the culture of the firm.
